Model Road Opened To Mark `100 Days To Go' For Commonwealth Youth Games
Section Commonwealth Youth Games Posted on Sat Jul 05, 2008 at 03:45:13 AM EST
With just 100 days left for the Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in October, a `model road' was inaugurated here on Friday by Michael Fennel, president of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). The significance was that most roads in Pune to be readied specifically for the CYG would be modelled on this particular stretch.
The launch was held at the start of the Senapati Bapat road which has been developed complete with street furniture, like signages, marked lanes, footpaths and plants on the dividers. The road was replete with banners and CYG signs. CEO of CGF Mike Hooper, MP and chairman of CYG Pune 2008 Suresh Kalmadi and municipal commissioner Pravinsinh Pardeshi were present for the inauguration. Civic officials said that all CYG roads being developed under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission and some of the main, but non-CYG, roads, will sport the very same `model road' look till the games. "The idea is that these roads will be developed in an ideal way -- with storm water drains, services shifted to the sides, footpaths and cycle tracks. For the games they will also wear a decorative look with plantations and signages. Some work on the S.B. road is still to be done, but, today, we paid a visit to mark the 100 days left for CYG," Pardeshi said. Pardeshi added that the airport to Jail road, which would be one of the important thoroughfares during the CYG, would be ready by July 15. While part of the Baner road, till Baner gaothan, would be completed by July 15, the remaining stretch, till the Balewadi junction, would need one more month, till September, to be ready for use. The Ganeshkhind road would be ready by August 31 and Nehru road and Shivaji road would be done by mid-August," he said. Source: TOI, July-04-2008
