Commonwealth Youth Games To Be Held In Pune From October 12-18

A baton relay will commence from Delhi University campus on August one and pass through nine states to mark the beginning of the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Pune from October 12-18.

Aimed at promoting "sports culture", the baton relay will criss-cross Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra and will cover a distance of 8,000 kilometers before reaching the venue on October 8, Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi said on Thursday.

An independent multi-sports event, the Youth Games are a run up and a trial event to the Commonwealth Games 2010 to be held in Delhi.

Over 1,300 athletes and 350 officials from 71 countries will participate in these games which will have nine disciplines athletics, badminton, boxing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling, Kalmadi said.

It is for the first time, the Commonwealth Youth Games will be held in Asia.

The inaugural Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Edinburgh, Scotland (August 10-14, 2000). Bendigo in Australia hosted the second edition held from November 30-December 3, 2004.

Pune will also play host to the World Junior Badminton Championship which will follow the CYG.
