The Assam Olympic Association (AOA) has moved the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to bid for the SAF Games with Guwahati as the venue, to ensure "proper utilisation" of the infrastructure created for the 33rd National Games in February last year.

The next edition of the SAF Games will be held in Dhaka.

The IOA was requested to bid for the edition after the Dhaka event. Several IOA officials have described the infrastructure in Guwahati as "befitting international events like the SAF and Saarc Games".

Guwahati has hosted international events like the second leg of the Asian Athletic Grand Prix at Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium last year, the World Junior Ranking Tennis tournaments at the Chachal Tennis Complex and an international badminton tournament at Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, after the National Games.

A delegation of AOA officials, led by general secretary Rockybul Hussain, met IOA president Suresh Kalmadi in New Delhi yesterday.

The team included treasurer Raj Kakati, joint secretaries Pradip Kumar Hazarika and Omar Rashid and assistant secretary Bishnu Ram Nunisa.

The delegation requested the IOA to allot as many coaching camps and national and international tournaments in various disciplines as possible to help the AOA utilise the "international standard infrastructure".

The city has been hosting a handball coaching programme since last month for the national youth (under-21) and under-18 (junior) squads at Tepesia sports complex.
