The Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) organising committee will be organising nature conservation activities on Thursday on account of World Environment Day. With growing concerns over global warming and depleting green cover, the activities will aim at enhancing public attention and action about nature conservation and environmental protection.
On Thursday, the CYG team will be carrying out a tree plantation drive wherein 25,000 saplings will be planted at Vetal tekdi on Paud road. The plantation drive will commence at 7.30 am in the presence of mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale, Lt. Gen. Ashok Kapur (retd), additional director general, CYG and several other dignitaries. The drive will be undertaken by the CYG team in association with the Forest Department, Pune division and the Pune Municipal Corporation. Following the tree plantation, 250 students from the Bhartiya Vidyapeeth college along with CYG team, members of the Pathanjali Institute and citizens would gather near the Mula river near Deccan bus stand to clean the river bed. The cleaning activities will commence at 10 am and would continue till 1 pm. Speaking to TOI, Purnima Pendse, who is heading the Green Games initiatives of the CYG said, "Since the theme of the games is `Green Games', we are doing all we can along those lines. Our activities are being support by the PMC and the forest department and we hope to make Pune look clean and green. The planting of saplings at Vetal tekdi on Thursday will be the first step. In future, we plan to go to other areas like Parvati, as part of the project". TNN
