Off the field records might well surpass the sportspersons' heroics in the ensuing National Games. After the billboard fiasco, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has sought minister's status for two organising committee members of the mega event citing protocol.

The IOA president, Suresh Kalmadi, has written a letter recently to the state to accord the status of minister to two key office-bearers of the National Games Organising Committee (NGOC) and allow them use VIP beacon lights.

"According to Kalmadi's letter, the working chairman of NGOC, R.K. Anand, should be accorded the status of a cabinet minister and NGOC secretary (I) S.M. Hashmi the status of a minister of state," a committee member said.

The officials of different sports bodies in the state are amused at this development because they did not see any such arrangement at any of the previous National Games. They attributed the development to power and status conscious NGOC members.

"I am sure this is the first time that the working chairman of NGOC would be accorded the status of a cabinet minister," secretary of a state-level association said.

At most of the National Games held earlier, the chief minister of the organising state was the chairman of the organising committee.

Thus, there was no need to accord such a status, another secretary said.

"In Jharkhand, the organising chairman is the chief minister of the state. Thus, it is strange that Kalmadi has written to the state to accord such a status to the working chairman and one of the two organising secretaries, Hashmi. The other organising secretary (II) is R.S. Verma, an IAS," he added.
