Pune Races Against Time For Commonwealth
Section Commonwealth Youth Games Posted on Fri Jun 27, 2008 at 11:41:33 PM EST
It is a sporting event still to be held, but the race has already begun.
Pune is running short of time to complete work for its biggest-ever sporting event, the Commonwealth Youth Games. With just over 100 days left for the event, vigorous activities are going on at the Balewadi Stadium, which will house over 2500 sportsmen and delegates from 71 countries. ![]() However, the list of pending work is enormous with subways, roads and beautification work still left to be done. With a monsoon break threatening to cut short the number of days left to gear up for the event, now questions are being raised whether all works will be completed before the d-day without actually compromising on quality. Initially, the Games organising committee had fixed August as deadline for completing all work, but now that has been postponed. ''We are targeting September 15 as the final deadline and working accordingly,'' says Praveensinh Pardesi, Municipal Commissioner, Pune. The organisers are confident that Pune will be ready for the mega event. ''I am pretty sure that the work will be completed in time. The stadium is almost ready and we are asking the administration to speed up the road works,'' says Suresh Kalmadi, chairman. The only thing that might dampen the organisers' enthusiasm is the rain.
