Pune, January 8: FORMER Pune Mayor Shantilal Suratwala, known for his association with Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, on Monday quit the NCP and joined the Congress.

MP Suresh Kalmadi had organised a function to welcome him in the party. The function was attended by city Congress president Abhay Chhajed, MLAs Balasaheb Shivarkar, Sharad Ranpise, Chandrakant Chhajed, Ramesh Bagve, Congress leader Sanjay Dutt and Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary Mohan Joshi.

Suratwala said he was pained when Kalmadi was treated as an outsider in the city. "I belong to a family originally from Gujarat. The very same thing may happen with me," he said and added that he was dissatisfied ever since NCP started joining hands with Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena over various issues. "I was looking for an opportunity to quit the party since then."

Shiv Chhatrapati Award winner sportsperson Smita Shirole, Indian Medical Association chairperson Vaijayanti Patwardhan, corporator Jayashri Kambale and Vasantrao Pathare too joined the Congress on Monday.

Speaking to the reporters, Kalmadi said the victory of Congress in the civic elections in Barahttp://www.skalmadi.org/my/prefs/Comments
