Pune wows Germany with surgical technique

Dr Shailesh Puntambekar couldn't have asked for more. Specially when 68-year-old Prof Liselotte Mettler, head of the gynaecology section of Kiel School of Gynaecological Endoscopy and Reproductive Medicine -- she has trained several Indian gynaecologists -- flew all the way from Germany to learn the `Pune technique' of conducting laparoscopic oncology surgery.
"I am extremely impressed with the manner in which Puntambekar and his team have jumped into such a controversial area of oncology surgery done laparoscopically. The results are similar to that of the open surgery, but we in Germany are impressed with the laparoscopic treatment of cancer," said Mettler.
Mettler, who is working on a World Health Organisation project on recognising biochemical markers for endometriosis and has authored over 20 books and 200 publications, said it was essential to learn and practice not only standard procedures in gynaecological endoscopy but also new surgical methods and the latest techniques.
Puntambekar who has pioneered the development of new techniques like laparoscopic radical hysterectomy, pelvic exenteration and others for the treatment of uterine malignancies, says that among all the cancer diseases, 22 to 25 per cent are related to cancer of the cervix. In fact, a patient operated under the Pune technique is back on his/her feet within 48 hours of surgery. The team of Puntambekar and Mettler conducted 20 such surgeries this week and presently a training workshop is underway with 40 gynaecologists participating from various parts of the country.
