Education, IT and ITES firms and manufacturing have powered Pune's economy

Aamche Pune, once a sleepy town recognised as a pensioner's paradise is rapidly transforming into a bustling metropolis. It can be no exaggeration if we can christine it as The City of The Future. Forbes.com in its newsletter on February 10, 2006, on the world's emerging cities for business has rated Pune as the third best destination after Chengdu in China and Toulouse in France.

Its proximity to Mumbai, the opening up of the Pune Airport and being a part of the Golden Quadrilateral network has created enormous opportunities for the city to grow. The City of the Future requires a major growth engine. For Mumbai, it was the financial potential and industrial status, for Bangalore it was IT but Pune has the unique distinction of having three major growth engines -- education, IT & ITES and manufacturing. The city is home not only for the prestigious Pune University but also prominent educational institutes like Symbiosis, Bharati Vidyapeeth, Sinhgad Institutes and the DYPatil Institutes alongwith hundreds of private institutes which impart quality education.

The city is gaining the status of the second fastest developing IT city in India. Numerous IT majors here setup large operations in Pune creating thousands of jobs. In the year 2003-04 and 2004-05, approximately 3 million sq ft of office space was occupied in Pune and trends show that by the year 2007-08, approximately 7.5 to 8 million sq ft of office space will be occupied. Considering an elaborate occupation of one person for every 100 sq ft of office space, one can imagine the job opportunities created not only for citizens of Pune but also migrants to the city. Good salaries in the IT industry have also triggered off a boom for the real estate industry and the demand for residential apartments would be on the rise for at least 5-7 years hence. There are a minimum of 7 SEZs approved for IT & ITES category in and around Pune city which will further increase job creation and the boost the economy of the city.

Pune is also the Detroit of the East. Along with Telco, Bajaj, Kinetic Motors and Mercedes Benz, we now have General Motors and Volkswagen announcing their plans to come to Pune. The Mahindra and Bharat Forge SEZs will act as catalysts to the growth engine
