Section Investment Pune Posted on Sun Jan 14, 2007 at 06:55:17 AM EST ![]() Density: 8,733 per square kilometer Population: 4,485,000
Known for its educational facilities (called the Oxford of the East) and its software and IT companies, Pune is an outsourcing paradise. It boasts facilities for Accenture, SAS Research, Symantec, Siemens, IBM and Red Hat, among others. As of 2005, Pune had 200,000 automobiles and 1 million two-wheelers on its roads. About 100,000 vehicles per year are being added to that number, and that should frighten transportation officials--the infrastructure is not able to handle this growth, and the city drags its heels in building roads and making repairs. The three-wheeled auto-rickshaws dominate the already-overtaxed streets, and it is a rare driver that uses the meter.
