How is Mr. Suresh Kalmadi equipped to handle Pune's problems? Solving difficulties of the people of Pune and working for the "all-round development" of Pune is Mr. Kalmadi's permanent agenda. He will handle them with the help of a strong support base of the Pune Municipal Corporation where the Congress-NCP combine is the ruling party; with the involvement of peoples’ representatives as well as the state and Central government to implement developmental activities. He will also approach the nationalized banks and the World Bank for obtaining funds/loans for some special projects. PUNE VYASPEETH The Pune Vyaspeeth is a citizen’s forum that cuts across political lines, and has been working towards making the city, which is already a major destination for foreign direct investment, also a destination for lovers of dance, music, culture and some music for the soul. The Vyaspeeth also acts as a pressure group to persuade the State & Central governments. Under Mr. Kalmadi's Chairmanship, Pune Vyaspeeth drew up a number of far reaching strategic plans for diverse sectors such as:
The Pune Vyaspeeth has conducted, for three consecutive years, the IT/BT seminars annually, highlighting the strength of the City in these cutting edge technologies. Vyaspeeth has also promoted the use of IT solutions in the traditional Manufacturing area, well known in Pune since early 1960s, with a view to increase quality, efficiency and the productivity of this vital sector. This was done by conducting, in association with MCCIA, regular seminars on "e-Manufacturing" for the benefit of the shop-floor managers. The Pune Vyaspeeth has also used the Pune-San Jose Sister City link very effectively to create both, the cultural and business bonds between the two cities. A similar exercise was also done for the Cities of Bremen (Germany ) and Pune. HI-TECH PUNE Mr Suresh Kalmadi, as chairman of Pune Vyaspeeth, has been leading the initiative. The conference packages and positions Pune as a premier destination for global Information Technology and Bio Technology. In Pune the software exports have increased from Rs. 125 crores in March 96 to Rs. 4500 crores in March 2004.
The Pune National Games of 1994 were one of the best conducted Games, and it was largely due to the political power and organizing ability of Mr. Kalmadi. Since then 5 National Games have been organized under his leadership. Infrastructure of international standards worth Rs. 1000 crore has been created as the Games were next organized at Pune, Banglore, Manipur, Punjab, and Hyderabad. The next games have been alloted to Assam. The National Games are one of the biggest multi-discipline sports events conducted in the country, involve the participation of thousands of athletes and officials. Conducting such a massive sports extravaganza calls for tremendous organizational ability, meticulous planning, top class communication systems and above all the ability to tackle emergencies quickly and effectively, cutting through red tape and bureaucratic delays. Mr. Kalmadi also organized the National Winter games at Auli, Shimla, and Gulmarg. He has focused on providing opportunities for National Winter Games to rise to Olympic Standards. Now, under Mr. Kalmadi who is the President of the Athletics Federation of India, and the President of the Indian Olympic Association, the first ever National Youth Games will soon be held in Banglore, and will henceforth become a regular feature.
