PMT Promises 500 New Buses In Addition To 350 Already On Way; No Hike In Fares

The Pune Municipal Transport (PMT) on Friday announced a New Year bonanza to its 5 lakh commuters — 500 new buses and no hike in existing fares. It also promised a "younger, reliable and more punctual" fleet. PMT general manager Radhesham Mopalwar made these announcements after presenting a draft budget for 2005-06.

The 500 buses would be in addition to the 350, already on the way. "We will seek a loan of Rs 70 crore to purchase these buses," Mopalwar said. During the current year, the PMT had placed orders to buy 200 new buses and has entered into a contract with a private agency for hiring 150 new buses. All the 350 buses are expected to join the fleet by March 31, 2005. Of the 847 buses in the existing fleet, 144 buses are more than 15 years old and 275 are more than 10 years old.

The Rs 227.27-crore draft budget was submitted by Mopalwar to PMT committee chairman Chandrashekhar Kapote on Friday. The committee is expected to forward it to the civic standing committee by the first fortnight of January.

What about the traffic? (1.00 / 1) (#1)
by dogbert on Sat Jan 07, 2006 at 02:16:36 AM EST

No wonder this is a welcome step, but PMT should have to think abt Pune's traffic as well.. "Pune's traffic is a mess because people don't want to depend on the Pune Municipal Transport (PMT) bus service. Pune traffic is the worst. It shows the selfish attitude of people". (are some of the arguements of the peoples).

In Pune, any vehicle comes in front of any other, and it is left to the other driver to swerve or slam on the brakes.

If Puneites don't realize that improving the PMT is the only means possible long term to resolve Pune's chaotic traffic problems, they are living in a fools paradise. Almost every major city in the world has a good public transport system, viz. Singapore, HongKong, London, the list goes on...

The PMT has to be improved so that people start patronizing it. Improvement in public transport was very very essential thing in the past. At least this step will eradicate this problem.

The tremendous growth in two wheelers in Pune in recent years, is an indication of worst public transport system in this city in India.

There is life...after love.
