Sybase Software (India) Pvt Ltd, the Indian subsidiary of the $778 million Sybase Inc, has opened its India development centre at Cybercity (Magarpatta City), a private IT park in Pune. The company is likely to invest around $5 million (Rs 23 crore approx) per year in India from next year, according to Raj Nathan, senior vice president of the Information Technology Solutions Group, Sybase Inc. The company plans to add 250 professionals by 2005. The company will also focus on the domestic market. Data management would be the dominant area for it in the country, though it would also address mobility and business analytics.

According to Nathan, the company decided to set shop in Pune as that would give it access to talent from premier educational institutions. Of the 50 people recruited so far, 90 per cent are from Universities from in and around Pune and they are very impressive, he said. Some of its employees worldwide, especially people of Indian origin, are also opting to work in India, he added.

At present, the India centre would only be an extension of the company's development centre in the US and would offer technical support to its clients, but it would start new product development next year, he said. The software product company delivers enterprise and mobile solutions for information management. World's most critical data in commerce (nearly half of Wall Street accounts), communication, finance, government (US Navy assets) and healthcare runs on Sybase.
