Central Govt. Agrees To Provide Additional Fund Of Rs 3,000 Crore For Commonwealth Games 2010

New Delhi will soon have more subways and flyovers. The Centre has agreed to provide the Delhi government with an additional fund of Rs 3,000 crore to prepare for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Beginning this year, Delhi will get an additional Rs 500 crore every year from the Central plan fund and the bulk of the work will be carried out by the DDA, Delhi Development Authority.
The officials said the initial plan was to build 15 to 20 flyovers and subways for the games. “The idea is that the travelling time between the Games Village near Nizamuddin bridge and the venues of various events should not be more than five to 10 minutes and the distance should be signal free,” said an official. But a signal free gateway may not be possible between the village and Yamuna Sports Complex, the scheduled venue for many events. In a bid to overcome this problem, a plan has been mooted for an underground road corridor connecting the two. The integrated development plan will be from Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium till Metcalfe House in south Delhi and from India Gate in central Delhi to Yamuna Sports Complex in Suraj Mal Vihar in east Delhi.
