Section Pune Municipal Corporation Posted on Mon Sep 13, 2004 at 10:14:14 PM EST
Promising vast improvement in its services within six months, the Pune municipal transport (PMT) plans to add 350 brand new buses to its fleet by October end and scrap around 150 buses, which are more than 15 years old. "Ten new buses will arrive at PMT depots on Friday. The remaining 340 buses will arrive in similar lots of 10 each by October end," PMT general manager Radheshyam Mopalwar said. Besides enhancing the fleet, the PMT has started a crash programme to impart training to its 1,200 employees in the mechanical department to repair the existing PMT fleet. The staff has been asked to ensure that not a single bus runs on the road without its breaks and clutch system examined, Mopalwar said.
The PMT has already issued orders for purchase of 200 new buses, 100 each from Tata and Ashok Leyland. Work orders for hiring 150 new buses from private operators have also been issued. The PMT will hire an additional 150 buses after October if the experiment of hiring 150 buses proves successful. By the end of next month, the strength of the PMT's fleet will increase to 1,050. Currently, the PMT has 850 buses in its fleet, of which 150 are more than 15 years old. These will be scrapped after the arrival of the new buses. According to the recommendation made by the Central institute of road transport CIRT), the PMT will be able to maintain a good frequency of buses if it has 1,100 vehicles in its fleet, Kareer said.
