The Standing Committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Tuesday approved a proposal to engage Kirloskar Consultants to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for river improvement. Expenditure of Rs 24.35 lakh would be incurred on preparing the DPR. The DPR of the scheme would deal with issues like laying of drainage lines, setting up waste water treatment plants and water treatment plants, constructing a bund in the river near Mundhwa, solid garbage management, providing electric crematories, desilting of Pashan and Katraj lakes and other aspects of improving the river condition.

PMC’s river improvement project has been accepted by the Central Government sponsored National River Development Council (NRDC). If the NRDC accepts the DPR of river improvement scheme, 70 per cent of the total expenses would be borne by the NRDC while the civic body will have to bear 30 per cent expenses. The decision of sending a proposal to the NRDC was taken by the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP) and Environment department of the State Government in September last year. In June this year, the MJP informed the PMC that its river improvement scheme had been accepted by the NRDC.

Kirloskar Consultants, which is being engaged to prepare the DPR, will have to submit it to the NRDC. The firm will have to get it approved and help PMC get funds from the NRDC. It will have to help PMC in carrying out the tender process, supervise work undertaken by the scheme and provide technical aid.

The Standing Committee has approved also a Rs 9.21-crore tender moved by a Delhi-based company to increase the capacity of the Cantonment water works by 100 MLD. At present the water works has a capacity of 250 MLD. The SMS Environment Pvt Ltd, which has been engaged to upgrade the water works, will look after the maintenance. Standing Committee chairman Sangita Deokar said the upgradation of the water work will benefit Mundhwa, Keshavnagar, Chandan Nagar, Kharadi, Wadgaonsheri, Yerwada, Nagar Road, Koregaon Park, Mohammedwadi, Hadapsar, Sasanenagar, Gondhalenagar, Solapur Road, Khondhwa Khurd and Kondhwa Budruk areas.
