Road Beautification in Pune Based on Examples of Singapore And Japan

My name is sanket karmarkar. sanketkk1@rediffmail.com I have suggestions to transform Pune.

None of India's cities looks like Singapore. Though many efforts have been made to make Pune look better there are many lacunae that diffrentiate a beautiful global city from an ordinary city.

Suggestions:

Roads have to be beautiful and it can be done by

  1. each road must have pavement irrespective of whether it is large or small road on both sides. the pavement must be of good quality and marked with white and black colours on the side which is the junction between the road and the floor of the pavement.
  2. the road should not be left undone at the edges. in developed nations, the road or asphalt covers the entire surface and doesn't leave any area between the road and the pavement. the asphalt should cover all rest of the non pavement area.
  3. tree plantation along road side must be given top priority. the trees should be chosen esthetically-like Singapore. the airport road of Singapore is the best-one row of palm trees used at center of road which acts as road divider and one row of palm trees each at each side of the road.

active help from Singapore and Japan must be sought for road beautification, tree plantation pattern, decoration of squares, road bifurcations. indian private companies can be given subcontracts to beautify road. the Amby Valley is a great example where sahara group has developed roads like Singapore. they must be asked to repeat the same in Pune.

(Click on "Full Story" for more.)

  1. the sign posts of green colour put up in Pune look a bit ugly. the road traffic signals are ugly, the road [street lights] are not esthetic.

the road traffic signals used in pune must be made on american pattern where a long horizontal bar supports traffic lights. it looks esthetic and does not block traffic.
the same american styled direction posts must be used rather than todays giant ugly signposts with advertisements.

  2. there is no provision for human road crossing. what diffrentiates cities like singapore, tokyo or european cities from Pune is that those developed nations have a heap of traffic signals for humans at every small road. there are massive stripes of zebra crossings marked at every minor crossing making it sure that the signals at every minor road with zebra crossings run in such a way that the humans get a good chance to cross any road-big or small. this eliminates todays scenes where people walk on roads like cattle.
  3. Pune has many small lanes and alleys especially old Pune. in India, unfortunately these alleys look ugly. unlike Britain who also has such alleys, their alley look beautiful-why? we must prepere a fully asphalt covered road - then make lanes on both sides of alleys which gives them a get up and makes them look like uk.

lane marking can also change the face of bigger roads.

  4. parking rules-30% of space of roads is eaten by vehicles parked wrongly. vehicles include bicycles, 2 wheelers, cars.

there should be a strict singapore like parking law where vehicles should either be parked in parking lots or be moving on roads. no vehicle can be parked road side. new multistored paid parking lots will help. these should be created with both public and private funding. these can create lots of employment too.

  5. all open patches of land should be covered by grass. notice to all such land owners must be given. also govt.open land should be covered with grass, as in Singapore. this prevents dust from dirtying the city.
  6. active help from Singapore and Japan must be sought for town planning, city beautification, maintainance of monuments like Shaniwarwada and decoration of Pune on the basis of Singapore.
  7. a good subway or skybus system must be soom employed to help Pune which is getting crowded and full everyday.
  8. garbage cleaning methods etc. should all be copied from Japan. Japan be asked to fund and help Pune to maintain itself as clean as Japan or Singapore. active help from these developed nations must be sought to design roads, underpasses, flyovers, human crossing signals, road quality, lane marking, city beautification and pavement making.

Wow!  I would be happy if even one of your 11 points is implemented in Pune.  I think the PMC civil engineers need a refresher course in City & Regional Planning before designing and implementing any new PWD projects.
