Infosys BPO Arm, Progeon, Bets on Pune for Expansion - To Double Headcount to 840 in 1 Year

The business process outsourcing (BPO) windfall continues unabated. And this time it’s India’s largest-listed software services firm Infosys Technologies’ BPO arm, Progeon, that is going to ramp up and create more jobs in Pune. Six months after starting operations, Progeon has 400-odd people at its plush Pune centre. But now, the headcount is going to be doubled in the next 12 months. ‘‘Currently, we have 419 people and with expansion of Cisco operations and a large investment banking firm, we will double our strength within a year,’’ managing director and CEO Akshaya Bhargava said. But since Progeon, like Infosys, is always conservative about estimates, other company sources admit it would be close to 1,000-odd people in a year’s time.

For Progeon, Pune is its second centre in the country after Bangalore. ‘‘We are working on three customers here. And we will be expanding along with the Bangalore centre,’’ Bhargava said. June-end, Progeon’s headcount stood at 2,269 people with 391 being added during the April-June quarter of this financial year.

Besides the usual reasons of quality and an educated, English-speaking workforce, Pune’s biggest advantage is the low attrition levels here. ‘‘The attrition levels in Pune are much lower than in Bangalore,’’ Bhargava said. The reason is simple. With multinational firms like IBM, Accenture and HSBC hiring in tens of thousands to run their back-office, Pune is still to witness the kind of BPO boom being witnessed in either Bangalore, Gurgaon or Noida. Progeon’s attrition rate for the period-ended June 2004 was 39 per cent, while the industry rate is around 45-50 per cent.
