PMC Asks Central Water and Power Research Station To Check Water Pipeline Design

Municipal commissioner Nitin Kareer has urged the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) to conduct a technical scrutiny of the water pipeline project between the Khadakwasla dam and Parvati Water Works (PWW). The scrutiny order follows a complaint by leader of opposition Ujwal Keskar, who had alleged that there were several flaws in the design of the project, which was completed by the PMC seven years ago. The 12-km-long pipeline is called 'closed water pipeline'. It was designed to supply 800 million litres per day (MLD) of water from the dam to PWW.

In reality, it carries around 625 MLD of water, forcing the PMC to take the balance from the Mutha right bank canal. The Maharashtra Krishna Valley Development Corporation (MKVDC) has challenged this move, arguing that the entire quota of water should be supplied through the pipeline and not from the canal. The MKVDC levies higher charges for canal water than pipeline water. Hence, Keskar had demanded action against the officers for the faulty design of the pipeline.

Development engineer (water projects) V.G. Kulkarni admitted that the commissioner has asked him to hold talks with the CWPRS and urge them to conduct a technical scrutiny. "However, it is not an inquiry committee. We are seeking CWPRS advise to improve the design so that it can supply 800 MLD of water," he said.
