Pune Municipal Corporation Demolition Drive Clears Kawade, Solapur Rd; Karve, Nagar Rd Next On List

In yet another major drive, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Sunday removed large number of encroachments on either sides of the B T Kawade Road and parts of the busy Pune-Solapur highway, between Bhairoba Nala and Akashwani at Hadapsar. The drive was expected for long, considering that work on widening of the B T Kawade Road, a vital link between Solapur highway and Mundhwa, was badly affected due to encroachments. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is constructing a flyover, half-a-km away from the Solapur highway-end of this road, but rest of the work was stalled.

The extent of unauthorised structures occupying prime carriage way could be gauged from the fact that barely 40-50 feet space was available as against the proposed road width of 80-feet. Similarly, a large number of structures, mainly commercial establishments like roadside vendors, stalls, shops, engineering workshops, illegal compounds of hotels and business establishments had occupied space along the Solapur highway stretch from Bhairoba Nala to Lohia Garden and Lohia Garden to Akashwani.

The PMC’s renewed effort at tackling encroachments received a boost after Nitin Kareer took over as the municipal commissioner, a month ago. Within days of assuming charge, Kareer got a sizable stretch of the Sinhagad Road cleared of encroachments on June 20. While it was a major traffic blockade that was behind the Sinhagad Road drive, Kareer took the opportunity to send out clear signals that encroachments were not welcome.

There is more to come as the PMC has now set its eye on the Karve Road and Ahmednagar Road.

Meanwhile, on Sunday it was the 4-odd km stretch of B T Kawade Road — starting from the Solapur highway to the point where the road links with Ghorpadi — that resembled a virtual war zone from 7 am to 5 pm.

Nearly 43,000 sq ft of unauthorised construction was demolished in which 14 civic departments were involved. Besides 100 workers, 50 civic officials were there with 80 policemen to oversee the drive. As for the equipment and vehicles, 7 JCB excavators, 8 dumpers, 5 gas cutters and 10 trucks were used. ‘‘We had issued prior notices to the encroachers,’’ Additional Municipal Commissioner Dnyaneshwar Rajurkar said.

The squad went on to demolish unauthorised portions of a few reinforced cement concrete (RCC) structures, illegal dwellings, compound walls, barbed wire fencings, ottas built by shopkeepers, unauthorised eateries, tin sheds, workshops, auto-garages, tea stalls and paan kiosks. From bakery to garage, brass band shop, painters shop, poultry unit and chicken centres, snacks stores, dhaba, auto-spare parts, furniture and cycle repair shops, all were brought down.

Initially, a section of residents near Shankar Maharaj Math and along the B T Kawade Road tried to resist the drive, but gave up on realising the futility of their protest. City engineer Madhav Latkar ensured that the situation did not go out of control. As the staff demolished some dwellings and stalls near Wanavdi nala, legislator Balasaheb Shivarkar insisted that the PMC ought to have gone for a land-acquisition process before taking the action. At certain places, people could be seen demolishing their own structures, which were encroaching upon the road. A row of shops near the Citadel housing complex was demolished. Similarly, unauthorised construction by petrol pump owners near Akashwani, hotels and other commercial establishments were brought down.

Removal of electric poles (none / 0) (#2)
by prodrocks on Sun Oct 31, 2004 at 11:37:36 PM EST

Does anyone know the sequence in which public utilities are taken down when road widening work is done?  Once the electric poles are shifted, the road work on BT Kawde road could gather some steam.

Good news is that the AgaKhan Bridge (new bridge connecting K'Nagar to Koregaon Park) has paved access roads now.  The tarring of the roads was completed over the weekend.  Encroachments at both ends of the road have come up in full force - auto stand, various hawkers, etc.

Kudos to PMC!!!! (none / 0) (#1)

Well done PMC.  With the Koregaon-Kalyaninagar bridge nearing completion (lets say another 6-9 months), the traffic on Kawde  has been growing steadily.  Some progress has been made in streamlining the Ghorpadi railway crossing.  But the ROB work near Udaybaug remains a mess.  There is virtually no service road and traffic gets jammed everytime a train crosses.

It will be great if PMC puts pressure on the contractor J Kumar & Co. to finish up the Kawade Rd work now that the encroachments have been taking care of.  Maybe they are waiting for MSEB to shift the electric poles.

Amazing that 3 years on the work still goes on (none / 0) (#4)

Only in India can we see the snail's pace of work.  I cant believe I wrote this article 3 years ago.  The BT Kawde road work still goes on and on and on.  It might finally finish by the end of this year if we are lucky.

The good news is that the ROB has begun operations.
