Need New Train from Pune to Kerala - Arduous travel to Kerala from Pune, Maharashtra.

Last republished on Jun 2nd, 2004

Editor's Note: We would appreciate if our website visitors could comment, and provide more details, on the request made for a new train from Pune to Kerala.

This is to highlight the plight of travellers to the central/southern parts of Kerala from Pune. Presently, there are no superfast trains and there is just one daily train- the Mumbai Kanyakumari Jayanti Janata.

Although used mostly by people travelling to Kerala, it unnecessarily travels through entire Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, Taking 42 hours to reach Thiruvanathapuram from Pune, whereas trains going from Mumbai along the Konkan coast reach within 32 hours. (One never gets a ticket on that route and also there is no connecting train from Pune to catch those trains). Geographically Pune is closer to Kerala yet it takes more time to travel to Kerala from pune than from Mumbai.

There is a large Malayali population in Kerala and moreover people from Pune travel a lot and Kerala is emerging as one the hottest tourist spots. Moreover this train could also connect Goa to Pune which at present people are forced to use road transport (just see the bus bookings). With Konkan route being ideally a superfast route pune travellers should also benefit.

The authorities may please check the ticket sales between Pune and Kerala to verify the facts.

The authorities concerned may consider the following suggestions :

  1. The Pune- Ernakulam weekly train must be made daily and extended to Thiruvanathapuram.
  2. A new daily superfast train must be started between Pune and Thiruvanthapuram along the Pune- Ernakulam trains route.
    OR

The Kankumari Jayanti Janta be elevated to superfast status and diverted along the Pune- Ernakulam trains route.
    OR

The Mumbai Thiruvanathapuram weekly express be made daily and be elevated to superfast status and diverted along the Pune- Ernakulam trains route.
  3. Tatkal facilty for the superfast train be introduced.
  4. Start direct flight facilty between Pune- Kerala since there is not even a weekly direct flight from Pune to Kerala provided by any airline company.

The Superfast train between pune and kerala via goa should bring down the journey time between pune and goa which is too much at present.

What is the use ? (none / 0) (#8)
by Unregistered Visitors on Tue Jun 01, 2004 at 10:25:26 PM EST

What is the use of this discussion at this forum . Are the railway authorities going to view this discussion.
With each passing railway budget Pune division continues to be ignored and this time also there is no reason why it will not be.
At least a minister of state for railways should have been of this region if there were to be a change in this trend.

Yes, if there is some discussion by more people (4.00 / 1) (#9)
by Sanjay Sharma on Tue Jun 01, 2004 at 11:09:59 PM EST

The issues discussed here are regularly brought to the attention of Mr. Kalmadi and the relevant authorities.

In the meantime please try to bring together people who share the same need as you describe, so that there is a better appreciation that the need for a new train is widespread.

The more there is a discussion of how many people need the train, the better are the chances that the need will be looked at favorably by the authorities. Unfortunately, of the thousands of visitors to the website every week, very few have commented or seconded the need for the Pune-Kerala train.

divert new delhi trivandrum jankranti express (none / 0) (#15)
by Unregistered Visitors on Tue Jul 06, 2004 at 07:34:51 AM EST

If possible could the new delhi trivandrum jankranti express be diverted along the madgaon pune route and also have a commercial stop at pune junction . Yes this will defeat the purpose of jan kranti express but would it not create more passengers for this train since both pune trivandrum and pune -delhi passenger traffic is high and at present there is an urgent requirement for superfast trains to both these cities from pune. This route is much safer in monsoons as well.
Also due to its geographic location the jankranti from maharashtra state i.e. mumbai does not pass through pune so it can in no way be connected to new delhi by jan kranti otherwise.

need for train between pune and trivandrum (none / 0) (#10)
by Unregistered Visitors on Wed Jun 02, 2004 at 04:42:17 AM EST

Dear sir,
If you feel that not many people are interested in this particular train service just visit the official Indian railway discussion board website www.irsuggestions.org here a number of people have demanded such a service. Also just ask any one from the various malayalee associations in the city.
At present there are three rajhdhani expresses from mumbai to delhi out of this one of them namely the trivandrum rajdhani if it could be diverted via pune could serve the dual purposes of a superfast train between pune and trivandrum as well as pune and delhi.

not feasable (none / 0) (#11)
by Unregistered Visitors on Wed Jun 02, 2004 at 04:51:59 AM EST

The idea about rajdhani is not feasable due to peculiar booking laws of rajdhani due to which you have to book a ticket upto delhi or upto trivandrum no matter where you get down.

Urgent needs of pune railway division. (3.00 / 1) (#6)
by Unregistered Visitors on Sun May 30, 2004 at 10:53:11 AM EST

Dear Sir,
When we voted for Mr. Kalmadi we thought that finally we would get back the minister who would bring back the glorious status of pune railway division but we we are for dissapointment and shocked on his decision on not to run f or the post.
The Pune solapur section must be double lined and electification has to be done on a war footing but for that first mumbai-pune line must be converted from dc to ac .New overbridge to be constructed at pune junction. The escalator be made working.
A pune -trivandrum superfast train via goa and pune delhi rajdhani express via mumbai  are needed.A number of trains get delayed between pune and daund due to single line present there.
Also a faster rail service between pune and banglore as well as hyderabad is required for business purposes.
Could this be forwarded to Mr. Kalmadi please who in turn should take up this matter with the railway minister for inclusion in the next rail budget.

Pune/Ernakulam Train (none / 0) (#12)
by sudhakaran on Mon Jun 07, 2004 at 08:46:09 AM EST

Instead of straightaway making it a daily, frequency of Pune-Ernakulam weekly train should be increased to three days a week and extended to Thiruvanathapuram. It should also be speeded up.

Along with that, Kanyakumari Jayanti Janta should also be speeded up and allowed to run at its existing route.

The Mumbai Thiruvanathapuram weekly express be made daily and elevated to superfast status and diverted via Konkan route.

I found the link to this topic on irsuggestions:

Pune-Miraj line.

BTW, do you know why an ROB is being constructed at Sopan Baug (B.T. Kawde Rd) crossing?  Is this all part of some grand scheme to improve this route?
