In a major anti-encroachment drive on the Satara road, several illegal structures were demolished by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in a day-long operation on Sunday. A total of 78,663 square foot was cleared for road-widening. The areas to be vacated were demarcated. Several encroachers had removed their structures on their own. The PMC had recently issued notices to the encroaching parties, under section 478 (1) of the Mumbai Regional Town Planning Act, 1949, informing them about the imminent action. A press release issued by the PMC said there was little or no opposition to the action. The police force present at the site handled the situation well, it added. The PMC had initiated similar drives on the Sinhagad and Solapur roads a few months back.
