Section Business & Industry Posted on Mon Oct 11, 2004 at 05:37:20 AM EST
PUNE: Union minister for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal was in Pune to campaign for the Congress-NCP candidates on Monday, Oct 11, 2004. During the press briefing in the Congress Bhavan Lok Sabha MP Suresh Kalmadi urged Sibal to initiate measures for promoting Bio-Technology sector in Pune city. Stating that his ministry was planning to announce a new national policy on Bio-technology by January 2005, Mr. Sibal said "I assure that Pune will be given preference. I want to make Pune the Harvard of West". Then Mr. Sibal announced that his ministry was planning to set up an Institute of Sciences in Pune.
In another significant announcement, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Monday clarified that the union government had no intention, whatsoever, to enact a legislation to force the private sector to provide job reservations. During his press briefing, Sibal also lashed out against the Shiv Sena, terming it as a regional party having no national values and having a total disregard to India's federal structure. Sibal, the union minister for science and technology, pointed out that he was also the member of the committee, headed by NCP chief Sharad Pawar, constituted to frame a national policy on job reservations in the private sector. He said that the government was very clear on the issue. The government feels that the private sector should help the government in fulfilling some social responsibilities. "I am also the member of the said committee. The brief given to me is to frame a policy which will encourage the private sector to take up these social responsibilities. We do not plan to enact any law," Sibal said.
