Rs 1,200 Crore Auto Testing Labs For Pune & Gurgaon Awaiting Cabinet Nod
Section Business & Industry Posted on Sun Oct 10, 2004 at 10:47:20 PM EST
The Government intends to invest Rs 1,200 crore for setting up two testing facilities for automobiles at Pune in Maharashtra and Gurgaon in Haryana. The proposal, prepared by the heavy industries ministry, has been given in-principle clearance by the Planning Commission. The proposal would soon be taken up by the Cabinet, said official sources. A company, Auto Cluster Development & Research Institute, was set up in April this year for the purpose. Product-testing facilities are the need of the hour if the interest of consumers are to be protected. They are also essential if the auto sector has to grow in the world market, said sources.
Last month, the government had okayed the Rs 67-crore first phase of the project at Pune under the industrial infrastructure upgradation scheme. The Pune-based Automotive Research Association of India, a co-operative industrial research body, had been urging the government to invest over Rs 1,000 crore in testing facilities. In its auto policy announced last year, the government had said that it would amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, Bureau of Indian Standards and other relevant provisions and introduce safety regulations that conform to global standards. Further, testing and certification facilities need to be revised and strengthened in accordance with safety standards of global order, said the policy.
