Due to the progressive policies of the Congress and PMC, Pune has emerged as a very strong center for Information and Bio Technology. Mr. Kalmadi is one of the few leaders who realized that the future cities should be knowledge based, and should leverage the intellectual resources of the citizens. Among his widely successful steps were the two IT/BT (Information Technology/Bio Technology) Conferences that have raised the visibility of Pune's IT and BT strengths and have attracted investment and generated economic activity and jobs in both the fields.

In addition, property tax has been reduced and it is now lesser than Hyderabad or Bangalore. Octroi has been rationalized. These have made Pune a favorable destination for new investment. To further attract knowledge based industries, the property taxes for these establishments were lowered to those of residential levels, a drastic cut which has proved to be a major attraction for the knowledge creating and transforming industries. The Education City Pune is now poised to become the Knowledge City Pune - A Step towards the 21st Century - A step towards making Pune the Number 1 city.

According to the Software Technology Parks of India figures, a hundred new companies have come to Pune in the last six months. Software exports have increased from Rs 2400 crore to Rs 4500 crore until last December, and about 10,000 new jobs have been created.

Mr. Kalmadi has also been tirelessly promoting Pune as the preferred destination for Biotechnology (BT), a science that will dominate global industrial growth in this century. Fifty years ago Pune became the first Indian city to establish modern Biotechology industry (BT) producing antibiotics and today it is the largest manufacturer of vaccines in the country supplying vaccines for every fourth child in the world. Mr Kalmadi recognized the importance of BT, especially of its confluence with IT, to the economic growth and industrial R & D. It was under his leadership that the first joint IT/BT conference in India was held four years ago in Pune. The focus of the conference was to present to the world a ‘Pune Showcase’ as a hub for biotechnology industrial R & D. The second conference dealt with the projected and potential biotechnology market especially in pharmaceuticals and agriculture in India. Special attention was paid to the role of BT in rural development The theme of the forthcoming conference, which is in the planning phase, is to highlight the strength of Pune to ensure ‘Maximum Return of Investment’ to the Bio Technology and Info Technology entrepreneurs.

World-renowned Indian artists participate in this festival, which also provides a platform to traditional local artistes, and encourages youth talent in the field of dance, music and drama. The festival provides a stage for children and young adults to showcase their talent.

The Pune Festival is also perhaps the only major cultural programme, which has over the years attracted top dignitaries to inaugurate it. M.P. LOK SABHA & RAJYA SABHA

Section _
Posted on Fri Feb 11, 2005 at 02:23:22 AM EST

Mr. Kalmadi member of the Lok Sabha & Rajya Sabha continuously for the last 25 years.
  • 1982-1988 Elected Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha)
  • 1988-1994 Re-elected Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha)
  • 1994-1995 Re-elected Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha)
  • 1996 Elected to Lok Sabha (Eleventh)
  • 1998 Re-elected Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha)
  • 2003 Elected as Treasurer of Cong. Party in Parliament
  • 2004 Elected as Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha

During his terms at the Rajya Sabha he has also served on important committees.

  • 1984-1985 Member, Committee on Petitions (Rajya Sabha)
  • 1986 Member, Committee on Subordinate Legislation (Rajya Sabha)
  • 1986-1988 Member, Committee on Defence (Rajya Sabha)
  • 1986-1988 Member, Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defence (Rajya Sabha)
  • 1988 Member, Committee on Subordinate Legislation
  • 1990-1992 Member, Committee on Petitions (Rajya Sabha)

His heart is however in Pune. "I have represented the city of Pune in the Lok Sabha only once and that too for only one year. But now, I want to devote my entire time for Pune and transform this great city into the Number 1 city of the 21st century.

He has used his MP funds for the benefit of Pune in the following ways:

  • In 1999, Mr. Kalmadi spent Rs. 1.10 crore (half of his annual 2 crore MP fund) for 31 sanitation blocks that were exclusively constructed for working women in various parts of the city. "I was shocked to see that there were very few sanitation blocks for women and those which existed were in a pathetic condition. Hence, I insisted that the new sanitation blocks be constructed for women should not look shabby," Mr. Kalmadi said.
  • In 2000 and 2001,
    • Rs. 3 crore was spent towards donating computers to 60 municipal schools in the city.
    • Rs 26 lakh was granted for the renovation of old school buildings
    • Rs 10 lakh was spent on the construction of approach roads towards Shivtirthanagar and Sutardara in Kothrud, internal roads in the Shivajinagar police colony, and roads in Dhankawadi village.
    • Rs 10 lakh was granted to the opthalmology department at B.J. Medical College, the S.M. Joshi Sports Complex, and to the Blue Cross Society.
  • In 2003-2004, Mr. Kalmadi has already sent a detailed proposal to the district collectorate for undertaking water supply augmentation schemes and road works, worth Rs. 2.14 crore, in the fringe areas of Pune East, including Hadapsur, Urali Devachi, Undri-Pisoli, and Ambegaon in Haveli.

However, unlike a Lok Sabha MP who has to spend funds in the constituency which he/she represents, a Rajya Sabha member is required to issue grants even to other cities and States. A lot of the MP funds have been used in Pune itself, but Mr. Kalmadi has also supported development outside Pune. For example,

  • He granted Rs 20 lakh to the Gujarat Government for the rehabilitation of earthquake victims.
  • Rs 10 lakh for the construction of the Gevrai - Jategon road in Beed.
  • Rs 10 lakh for the Yashada Girls College in Nagpur.
  • Rs 10 lakh for the construction of roads in Umarsara in Yavatmal.
  • Rs 15 lakh for the garden, jogging track, & gymnasium in Shrirampur, Ahmednagar.

SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN

Section _
Posted on Fri Feb 11, 2005 at 02:20:11 AM EST

"I am an action-oriented and result-oriented person. I am a doer. My track record proves beyond doubt that I deliver the goods. Pune needs a CEO like the metropolitan cities-- Bangalore, Hyderabad in order to market it at a national and international level. As the Lok Sabha MP, I will lead Pune to make it the No 1 city of India. "

- Mr. Suresh Kalmadi

Mr. Suresh Kalmadi is a very successful businessman who has risen to the top during the last 30 years by his vision, sheer dynamism, and superb organization skills. He is a self-made man, and today his creations provide employment to over 2500 people. The birth and growth of the Sai Service Group took place because of Mr. Kalmadi's vision, dynamism, and his ability to put people in the proper places, including his brother and son who are very active participants of the Sai Service Group.

"I have no time or inclination for small events. Anything big and massive immediately calls for my attention. I have always been a natural organizer, so all these roles come easily to me. The pressure never reaches boiling point because I have delegated authority to competent persons. So starting new projects and sustaining them has never been an issue," Mr. Kalmadi has said.

Mr. Kalmadi started in April 1974 by acquiring an interest in Poona Coffee House which today is the leading restaurant located in the most prestigious area in the heart of the city.

In July 1974 he acquired a dealership of Hindustan Petroleum for all its products. Then in 1985 he took his big step, and under the banner of Sai Service Station Ltd. (incorporated on August 09, 1985) he took the dealership of Maruti Udyog Ltd. Next he added the dealership of Bajaj Auto Ltd. in 1986. He also brought to India via the Sai Service Group the Rent-a-Car scheme for the first time. Sai Service has now spread its wings to Mumbai, Kolhapur, Kochi, and Goa.

Sai Service has acquired the Number 1 position in Maruti dealership in the country (4 times including 2003), and continues to be the leading organization for Maruti Udyog Ltd. Sai Service has also acquired the Number 1 position in Bajaj dealerships in the country. The group has also taken to marketing Mahindra vehicles in Mumbai.

As a businessman himself, Mr. Kalmadi has been actively trying to get corporate support for sports and other cultural activities. He always encourages his fellow businessmen to sponsor and promote sports other than cricket. At the recent 1st Standard Chartered Mumbai International Marathon, the sponsors had pumped in USD 210,000 to make it the richest marathon in Asia. He says, "I want to see that 30 corporate houses back 30 different sports so that every sport gets proper recognition."

Another major success has been signing up Dentsu to support the Asian Athletics Competition with USD 100,000. Recently Samsung India set up a fund for India's five potential medal winners, "Samsung Olympic Ratanas" (Abhinav Bindra, Anjali Bhagwat, Anju George, KM Beenamol, and Karnam Malleswari) to financially support their training expenses till the Athens Olympics in August 2004. Samsung India also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to become the official sponsor of the Indian Team to the Athens Olympics in the category of Consumer Electronics, IT and Telecommunications. The MoU was signed by Samsung India Director R Zutshi and IOA President Mr. Suresh Kalmadi.
