Hours after district guardian minister Ajit Pawar asked Nationalist Congress Party workers to ensure that Pune's leader is a Marathi-speaking Maharashtrian, Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi shot back by saying he was a Maharashtrian.
"I went to jail along with NCP chief Sharad Pawar during the agitation for inclusion of Belgaum in Maharashtra and other border areas into Maharashtra. I have studied in Pune. Now how can one say I am an outsider,'' Kalmadi said speaking at a rally of Congress minority cell workers organised at Congress House.
As for the civic polls, Kalmadi said, "The more Pawar criticises me, the Congress will get more seats.'' Taking potshots at Pawar, Kalmadi said though he was guardian minister of Pune, he was developing Baramati.
On stalling Pune's development, Kalmadi said, "I brought money from the Centre for development of Pune. How much of money did Ajit Pawar get for Pune's development from the State government.'' He said the NCP was behaving like an opposition party.
