IAAF World Half Marathon 2004: India Keen To Enter The League Of International Hosts
Section Athletics Federation of India
Posted on Thu Sep 09, 2004 at 03:09:51 AM EST
On October 03, 2004 New Delhi will host the World Half Marathon race — a prestigious enough event, staged under the banner of the International Associations of Athletics Federations (IAAF). But for Delhi, it’s being seen as much more than that: It’s the first step in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games of 2010, and so the first chance for the city to show it can pull off such events. Indeed, a successful staging of the Half Marathon will bolster plans to bid for the 2014 Asiad and Olympics in 2020. ‘‘Rest assured, we will come out of this successful,’’ says AFI secretary Lalit Bhanot. If they can, the spin-offs for Delhi could stretch into the next decade. Shri Suresh Kalmadi is the President of the AFI - Athletics Federation of India.
The event will certainly have the who’s who of international athletics, with over 500 participants from 80 countries, and top officials including IAAF chief Lamine Diack. Unlike the London or Boston open marathons, which are private in nature, the number of participants in the IAAF event from each country will be limited. There’s prize money for the first six individuals in each category (men and women), including $30,000 for the winner.
It’s only a one-day show, yet since it’s an IAAF event, there is little scope for any compromise. So the planning is in minute detail:
- The agencies involved span the gamut of officialdom, including the Athletics Federation of India, the entire Delhi government (from health to sanitary to Public Works Department to traffic), the Union ministries of Defence, External Affairs, Civil Aviation, Health and their departments like the Airports Authority of India, DGCA and Customs and tourism
- Top-class live coverage (ESPN-Star and DD Sports have the rights) with the feeds watched in several countries around the world.
- Three helicopters will follow the 21.0975-km route.
- Seiko and track event management experts Winning Time will be coming in with tonnes of material; the latter are in charge of fixing the chips in marathoners’ shoes to measure the minutest details of time.
- Special motorbikes, which can drive at very slow speeds, to track the runners.
- Pothole-free roads (though this may require more than a mere mortal endeavour.)
- Healthcare is under the charge of Dr Naresh Trehan.
- Visas on arrival for participants.
